I love reading newspaper in the mornings, especially the first page where you get most important local to global issues. But for past one week our newspaper is coming with huge ad in its first and second pages; one construction company with its offer for home buyers. Today I couldn’t withstand this irritation and tore off the first leaf of the paper, and as the mood gone I went through fast and kept paper aside. But Sunday was special day when I could lay and read and analyze carefully. Why enterprises do not think of bringing promotion campaigns where both people and company gets benefited?
Today I saw my friends watching cricket match between India and West Indies, I also set besides them to witness how the organizers handling advertisement. As these days I got this sickness of ad-syndrome and thought of to have a look. Now days World Cricket Cup is going on and it is hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and most of the matches held in India. And when India plays it’s the most expensive ads of the game as more people watch and surprisingly I found out that many India matches played on Sunday.
I observed that during every chance of interval when players bringing ball, preparation, or change of player, the TV channel busts with ad, and it is like half of the game is with advertisement. Not only that, even when player is bowling the screen squeezed to top-right corner through availing empty space in left and down and not surprising again ‘ads’. It is also so annoying finding big ads being laid even in the ground, which you can’t miss at all. Even the wickets and bats are not spared from advertisement as these small particles of the cricket are important as they keep getting caught by photography and video. Oh I was massed with ads in my 15 minutes cricket experience and I left.
Beside of these there are useless and disturbing SMS ads that I get every day. And the ad hording in the city, oh that is a big stuff; I try to not look around by trying to avoid ad bombardment. Today we find advertisement to be so widespread without government intervention and much regulation. If you look carefully all these enterprises that give these big advertisements are ‘Public Companies’, which means they are using public money in these promotion campaigns. And idea behind seems to be not increasing sales but positioning in people’s mind that this particular company is doing fine business.
Hey did I tell ‘fine business’, look ahead some of these enterprises are in huge debt, some are in risk of bankruptcy and some are even in trouble. But by pumping ads, people get addicted to keep investing on these brand holders. As they get fresh cash with sale of new shares, and it is new avenue of bringing new promotions. So it is the matter of bringing people’s attention to particular brands by various means as ads, big deals, some particular news about company, etc. By enabling their brand to be positioned the small and medium enterprises get though job entering to market as an alternative option besides well advertised brands.
As I was upset to this matter, one good news-report that I have read from Today’s Zaman made me happy. To celebrate its 50th anniversary a biscuit company brought a snow to the city which has not seen snow fall for past 30 years. It was not joy only for children and but elders as well for those who happened to be central square of Mersin city, Turkey. It was surprise for many people to play with snow first time in their life. Company managed this endeavor with its volunteers by bringing snow from mountains and spraying over the square with the use of special machine. The company in its news report stated that “aim is to surprise and make people happy”.
